Manley Carstairs has just lost his mother, so he hires Annie to look after his large Victorian house (and himself). Their relationship progresses rapidly from initial reserve to active hatred, making Manley's life a living hell. Eventually he can take no more and advances on Annie with strangulation in mind. When he trips and falls into her arms, they embrace, and the rest, as they say, is history.
